AMD APU For Next Gen Gaming |
The Most Powerful AMD Chip is Fueling Speculation about New Consoles. The Architecture Points towards the PlayStation 6 .
A New APU design from AMD codenamed Magnus has sparked speculation around upcoming game consoles. According to a leak from the Youtube channel Moore's Law Is Dead, which is considered credible, it is a particularly powerful system-on-a-chip that is being developed in the semi-custom products department.
This is exactly the division that AMD uses for hardware cooperation with console manufacturers such as Sony and Microsoft. Nothing is officially confirmed, but the shape and structure of Magnus indicate a possible use in the next console generation.
Technically, Magnus is based on a combination of several chips:
A 144 square millimeter CPU-which in 3-nanometer technology houses three classic Zen-6 cores as well as eight Zen-6C cores - a total of eleven computing cores without low-power units.
This speaks in favor of a design that is intended for stationary systems with a constant power supply. The graphics unit is particularly large at 264 square millimeters and, according to the leak, should have a 384-bit interface.
This surpasses the memory subsystem of the Xbox Series X, for example, which relies on 320 bits. The high bandwidth in combination with modern RDNA architecture could provide significantly more graphics performance than with previous APUs.

The two are connected via a so-called bridge-which, as it is also used in other AMD configurations. This modular structure allows CPU and GPU parts to be manufactured separately and optimally adapted to the respective requirements.
The elongated shape of the graphics chip is striking, which, in the opinion of the leaker, is strongly reminiscent of previous console designs led by Playstation architect Mark Cerny.
The combination of CPU configuration, the wide graphics memory interface and the silicon distribution suggests that Magnus is intended as the centerpiece of an upcoming console. The structure and direction fit strikingly well with previous Sony strategies, but of course Magnus could also be used in the next Xbox.
Both Sony and Microsoft recently officially announced shortly after each other that they are working intensively on the next generation of consoles; one of Sony's managers even specifically spoke of a Playstation 6.
The new devices could be launched in late 2027 or early 2028. However, a well-known youtuber with the pseudonym Detective Seeds just got in touch: he had learned from a Sony engineer that the PS6 would only be announced in 2028 and then released in 2029.
