The Razer Core X V2 when used with a Razer notebook |
Razer has updated the eGPU Dock Core-X and installed a Thunderbolt 5 interface in the new version 2, with which twice the data transfer rate compared to the previous model is possible. Up to 80 GBit / s bidirectionally should also have little effect on fast graphics cards, at the same time a connected notebook can be charged with up to 140 watts.
The Core X V2 supports graphics cards with a thickness of up to four slots, the predecessor had two slots. This significantly increases the compatibility, because especially high-end graphics cards are usually equipped with very large coolers and are more likely to find space in the new case.
Perforated side panels should provide sufficient ventilation, in addition, the power supply also supports ventilation. However, unlike the original Core X, this is no longer included in the scope of delivery. In addition to its own GPU, it is also necessary to purchase its own power supply, which significantly increases the real price of the case.
Razer's eGPU Dock Other functions are no longer available
Razer recommends an ATX power supply that can deliver at least 220 watts more than the specified power consumption of the installed graphics card. In addition to a little safety margin, the additional power is used for the charging function of the connected notebook or handheld.
There are no other consumers either, because the Thunderbolt 4 Dock included in the Core X with some USB ports and an Ethernet port is no longer available in the new Core X V2. Razer refers to a dedicated Thunderbolt 5 dock on the product page. So if you want to have all the functions, you need an additional device – and you pay extra for it.
A suitable Thunderbolt 5 cable with a length of one meter is included in the scope of delivery of the 3.9 kilogram housing. It can also be used with Thunderbolt 4 devices or USB 4, provided that the computer supports the use of eGPUs. Apple-Silicon is still not compatible.
The Core X V2 should go on sale for $ 350, the Chroma edition with RGB lighting will cost $ 400. This makes the Core X V2 $ 50 more expensive than its predecessor for $ 299, plus the power supply required for the new model. Razer does not yet specify euro prices.
