On her way to the dentist, a woman was caught by a mobile phone speed camera even though she wasn't actually on the phone.
A driver in the Netherlands has received a fine of 439 euros after she was caught by a mobile phone flash. As the regional TV and radio station Omroep Brabant reports on its website, the fine was imposed for talking on the phone while driving.
In reality, however, the woman was holding a cold pack to her cheek, as she had just come from the dentist, where her wisdom teeth were pulled. At home, she found a letter on her doormat and it was immediately clear to her that it was a fine, the statement continued. The alleged violation occurred on July 2, 2025 and the woman could remember that day.
Prospects of a successful appeal very good
The fine said she was holding an electronic mobile device in her hand. The woman requested the evidence photo, which clearly shows that she is holding an ice pack to her cheek.
This is not only significantly larger than a mobile phone, the picture also shows that your smartphone is located in a mobile phone holder on the dashboard. The woman wants to object to the fine and estimates her prospects for success as very good.
In Germany, the first mobile phone flash was put into regular operation in April 2025 after a test phase in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. This triggers when the system detects a smartphone and the typical hand or arm posture when making a call.
How To Use Your Mobile Phone For Dental Photography?
Within the first three months or so, the speed camera has already registered more than 300 drivers with a mobile phone at the wheel. It is not known whether error identifications also occurred here.
She was on her way to work after visiting the dentist, she told the station. "At that time there was still a police car standing next to me and I thought: Hopefully they don't think that I'm talking on the phone with the cooling battery on my cheek." While the officers did not notice anything suspicious in the police car, however, a traffic camera reacted.
