The US company Techless has launched the pre-sale of a special iPhone for children in the UK. Under the brand name Sage Mobile, slimmed-down versions of the iPhone 16e and iPhone 16 Pro are available, where users can use only limited functions.

For example, children should not be able to access all content on the Internet on the Sage iPhone: content classified as harmful is automatically blocked. Also, no own apps should be able to be installed later. The Apple App Store is blocked, instead users have their own app marketplace with curated applications at their disposal.

Sage Mobile markets the smartphone as a way to reduce children's screen time. They should be able to do more without their smartphone, but at the same time be reachable and able to access certain applications.

Social media apps like Tiktok and Instagram cannot be installed on the devices. However, among other things, the pre-installed Apple applications can be used, Google Maps as well as banking and local transport apps should also be able to be installed. Sage Mobile promises parents that their children will not be able to override the restrictions, unlike, for example, with installed apps that limit the time of use.

The use of a VPN should also not help in being able to install unwanted content. Parents should have to deal as little as possible with setting up the smartphone and monitoring the content – that's all Sage Mobile is supposed to do.

However, parents also pay a high price for this: the Sage iPhone is only available via a monthly subscription, where the iPhone itself is only leased. The iPhone 16e in the Sage version costs 100 pounds per month, the equivalent of just under 115 euros. An iPhone 16 Pro with the Sage software costs 150 pounds per month, which is over 170 euros.

For comparison: an iPhone 16e with a monthly contract with Vodafone UK costs from 37 pounds a month. An iPhone 16 Pro costs from 48 pounds a month with a contract. However, the Sage tariff should be able to be cancelled on a monthly basis – the Vodafone offers are valid for a three-year contract.
