The Lenovo Legion Go 2 with AMD Ryzen Z2 and Ryzen Z2 Extreme is scheduled to go on sale this month and will ship with Windows 11 Home as standard. However, Lenovo is already considering official support for SteamOS.
As expected, Lenovo had used the IFA 2025 in Berlin to present the second generation of its handheld PC, the Lenovo Legion Go 2, or Lenovo Legion Gen 2 (8.8"), as the official name, to the world public. The gaming handheld will be available in various configurations at retail later this month and will be delivered with Windows 11 Home. However, support for SteamOS is already being worked on in the background.
SteamOS vs. Windows 11: Linux on the same hardware faster
Valve's dedicated gaming distribution, which is based on the Rolling Release Arch Linux, is simply the faster, better and more efficient operating system for gamers on the same hardware basis. As the comparative tests on the Lenovo Legion Go S clearly prove.
SteamOS vs. Windows 11: Linux is Faster, better, more efficient
This will not have remained hidden from Lenovo and potential customers either, and so it is not surprising that the Chinese company confirms on demand in the r/LegionGo subreddit that official support for SteamOS on the Lenovo Legion Go Gen 2 is already being tested internally. The Legion Go S had impressively proven that SteamOS is the better choice for mobile handheld PCs and is not only faster, but also more efficient.
While the Legion Go Gen 2 has been optimized for Windows to offer correspondingly broad compatibility and a complete gaming experience immediately after unpacking, its open hardware platform allows users to explore alternative configurations if they wish. We are testing an official support for SteamOS on the Legion Go Gen 2.

Dedicated gaming distributions based on Linux, such as CachyOS, Nobara Linux, Bazzite, Nitrux and last but not least SteamOS are thus becoming more and more a real threat to Windows 11 and a real alternative for gamers. Thanks to Proton and Mesa and the updates expected in the next few months, the next performance improvements are already in the starting blocks. Shero King will report.
