Error AP204: Windows Update is the cause of error messages in Forza games
Error AP204

Not new graphics drivers, but a Windows update causes error messages Error AP204 when starting older games of the Forza series. So the messages that the new GeForce driver 581.80 is to blame for this are wrong. The article has been corrected accordingly.

According to information from readers, it has been revealed that the problem with the error messages has been around for some time and also affects users of Radeon graphics cards. The topic was discussed in the forum of Forza Horizon 3 weeks ago (thanks to "Uschi"). It turned out that the problem is not to be found in the current drivers from AMD and Nvidia, but the Windows update KB5065789 is to blame for this. If this is removed, the error messages disappear again, as those affected agree.

However, the whole thing is not problematic anyway, because players report that the titles can be played normally after clicking away the error message. In the original message it was assumed that the games no longer work at all. Therefore, the title and introduction have been adjusted. The following information is therefore no longer correct.

User reports Error AP204 problem with older Forza games

In the official Nvidia forum, users can provide feedback on the new game-ready driver. The user "XaToR" has done this: the games Forza Horizon 3, Forza Motorsport 6 Apex and Forza Motorsport 7 are no longer running on his system with a GeForce RTX 5090. Instead, the error message "AP204, GPU not compatible" appears. This happens both with the new GeForce 581.80 and with the previous 581.57. The only remedy is to revert to the driver version 576.88.

In the case of such an error message, Microsoft had previously recommended switching to a more modern GPU, as certain DirectX 12 features are not supported. However, in the case of a state-of-the-art RTX 5090, this may not be the cause.

Nvidia can reproduce the Error AP204

After another user reported the same error in the Nvidia forum, Nvidia has since confirmed that the error is reproducible. Now we want to see what we can do about it. However, it is unlikely that the games will receive a patch yet. The fact that Nvidia could change something on the driver itself is not mentioned at all at first.

I can reproduce that. I'm looking to see if there's anything we can do, but probably not, as I don't think these games will ever get additional patches and may be looking for certain things that are out of our control.

The mentioned Forza titles are from the years 2016 and 2017, so they are far from current. Therefore, it is very unlikely that you will receive another patch. So far, there is no evidence that problems with the new GeForce drivers are appearing even with recent titles.
