AMD FSR 'Redstone': Super Resolution is now called Upscaling

AMD is renaming its Super Resolution technology, calling it simply FSR Upscaling with the release of FSR 'Redstone'. FidelityFX Super Resolution remains the umbrella term for all technologies integrated within FSR.

With this decision, AMD separates the generic term of the FSR suite, which is to be extensively rebuilt anyway with the release of FSR 'Redstone' and will receive four new technologies, and its upscaling component more cleanly from each other in the future. For players, nothing changes except a designation.

FSR 4 "Redstone", which celebrated its premiere in the form of the first new feature "Ray Regeneration" in Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, like FSR 4, will remain reserved for the latest Radeon generation based on the RDNA-4 architecture ("GFX12XX") and will bring the following features in summary.

AMD FSR 'Redstone' - Features

•  A new AI model, greatly improved by machine learning ("ML"), which is intended to improve AI upscaling ("Super Resolution"), especially at lower output resolutions.
•  A ray reconstruction ("Ray Reconstruction"), which is called "Ray Regeneration" and is intended to improve the representation in games with ray tracing and path tracing.
•  A new so-called "Neural Radiance Caching", which should potentially lead to more accurate illumination at a higher speed when using pathtracing.
•  A new intermediate image calculation ("Frame Generation"), which for the first time uses artificially generated images using ML and will no longer use the algorithm of FSR 3.1.

The following four new features will significantly expand FSR 4 using AI and ML, which AMD would like to use to further close the gap to Nvidia's DLSS.
