LG is about to unveil its first tandem OLED gaming monitor. The Ultragear 27GX790B-B uses the same panel as Asus' top models – with extreme refresh rates, high brightness, and modern interface technology.

It was a little bizarre anyway that Asus was the first provider to launch a tandem OLED panel in a gaming monitor on the market - even before LG Electronics itself had a corresponding monitor on offer based on the 27-inch panel from LG Display. But now it should start, as a product listing of the Ultragear 27GX790B-B in China suggests.

Tandem-OLED finally from the source

The monitor is based on the fourth-generation "Primary RGB Tandem" WOLED panel, which Asus also uses in the PG27AQWP-W (test). As a result, the basic key data are already known. The 1440p panel can be operated in dual mode with 720p and ranges between 540 and 720 Hertz maximum frame rate.

LG Ultragear 27GX790B-B Specs and Price with release

It is known that LG relies on Displayport 2.1 and HDMI 2.1 for the Ultragear 27GX790B-B. The DisplayPort specifies 80 Gbit /s, but Display Stream Compression is also used. Exactly what the possible operating modes look like remains uncertain for the time being. For 1440p and 540 Hertz, UHBR20 is necessary in any case to avoid DSC. Accordingly, one should not rely firmly on this information until retailware has been tested.

A big issue with OLED is always the brightness, which should increase significantly with tandem OLED. LG lists up to 335 cd / m2 SDR and 1,500 cd / m2 HDR in a "small" window for the Ultragear 27GX790B-B - presumably five percent. For comparison: the Asus ROG Swift PG27AQWP-W achieves 589 cd/m2 SDR measured by PCGH with "Universal Brightness" disabled and 1,576.7 cd/m2 in the five percent window. Traditionally, the Asus OLED monitors with the same panel deliver slightly higher brightness values than the LG models. However, reliable statements only allow independent tests. LG has certified its panel with DisplayHDR True Black 500, which suggests that LG also reaches at least 500 cd/m2 in the SDR top.

LG Ultragear 27GX790B-B From CES 2026 against Asus

LG is scheduled to unveil the Ultragear 27GX790B-B at CES 2026 in Las Vegas. It remains to be hoped that the product launch will take place quickly afterwards and customers will not have to wait until the summer. Because Asus is making its way on the OLED market, although the manufacturer does not produce its own panels. Nevertheless, according to Trendforce, Asus has made a clever product strategy the king of market share in the third quarter of 2025 - 21.9 percent, ahead of Samsung with 18 percent, MSI with 14.4 percent and only then LG Electronics itself with 12.9 percent.

Trendforce also attributes this to the fact that Asus offers a particularly broad product portfolio that specifically serves other segments in addition to gaming - for example with the Proart models. This closes the circle to a clever product strategy. Already in the last OLED generation, many gamers preferred Asus monitors, as they offer slightly better performance values and work fanless - which Asus can, however, also pay accordingly.
