Windows 11: KB5077181 fixes black screen issues with Nvidia GPUs and gaming artifacts
Windows 11: KB5077181

The mandatory update KB5077181 for Windows 11 fixes black screen problems with Nvidia GPUs, gaming artifacts, and Explorer crashes. It also closes 58 security vulnerabilities.

With the security update KB5077181 for Windows 11, Microsoft is delivering a comprehensive troubleshooting in February 2026. The update is mandatory and will be installed automatically. In addition to security-related fixes, it addresses several serious problems that had occurred since the January patch.

In total, KB5077181 closes up to 58 security-critical vulnerabilities, according to Microsoft. Among them there is also a potential remote code execution vulnerability in Windows Notepad. In addition, the update integrates new functions, such as a cross-device resume option, which is reminiscent of well-known smartphone-PC concepts.

Gamers with Nvidia GPUs can breathe a sigh of relief

Especially relevant for gamers are the corrections in the graphics section. After the January update KB5074109, numerous users reported black screens, system freezes and graphic artifacts in games. Among other things, systems with Nvidia graphics cards were affected. Sometimes there were crashes of graphics-intensive applications or short-term signal losses in multi-monitor configurations.

Nvidia had recommended in the meantime to uninstall the January update in case of persistent problems, but this was only possible within a limited time window. With KB5077181, Microsoft is now officially fixing the black screen problem with certain Nvidia GPUs. A detailed list of affected models is not available. In addition, errors that could lead to startup problems with the message "KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE" in individual configurations were apparently corrected.

Gaming performance benefits

There is also an improvement in the gaming sector. Reports of frame rate drops and graphics errors after the January patch have decreased significantly with the new version. Tests suggest that titles like Forza Horizon 5 are running stably again. Nevertheless, Microsoft points out that updates will be rolled out gradually. Even with an identical build version, individual fixes can be activated with a time delay.

In addition, KB5077181 eliminates a problem with the "explorer.exe", which led to crashes after logging in. Since this process is responsible for the taskbar, Start menu and desktop, Windows 11 could hardly be used in affected cases. Systems with build 26200.7840 or newer contain all planned adjustments. However, due to the staggered rollout, it may take some time for all changes to be fully effective.
