FSR 'Diamond': AMD's next-gen upscaling exclusive to RDNA 5?
Source: AMD

AMD's next-generation AI upscaling technology, FSR 'Next' aka FSR 'Diamond', may be reserved for graphics cards based on the RDNA 5 architecture, while GPUs with RDNA 4 and older will be left out, according to a reliable source.

As part of the GDC ("Game Developers Conference") 2026, which will take place in San Francisco until March 13, Microsoft has announced the first details of the upcoming generation of the Xbox, the Helix project, which also supports FSR 'Next' aka FSR 'Diamond'. AMD's next-generation AI upscaling technology could be reserved exclusively for the upcoming RDNA 5 architecture ("GFX13XX"), while RDNA 4 ("GFX12XX") and older are not considered, according to Kepler_L2.

Like Jack Huynh, Senior vice president and general manager for computing and graphics at AMD, FSR 'Diamond' is to be optimized specifically for the "Project Helix" and accordingly integrated deeply into its developer tool, the so-called Xbox Development Kit ("XDK"). As with Sony's upcoming Playstation 6, AMD is cooperating directly with the game console manufacturer on a tailor-made solution. The following should be offered::

  • Next-generation Ray Reconstruction for Ray Tracing & Pathtracing
  • Designed for next-generation neural rendering
  • Next-generation AI-based upscaling
  • New AI-based multi-frame generation

Microsoft's next-generation Xbox is supposed to rely on the next generation of DirectX, presumably DirectX 13, and thanks to FSR 'Diamond', it will take no less than a quantum leap in ray tracing and path tracing performance.

It is quite possible that AMD will once again cut off old pigtails with the next generation of its ML-trained upscaling technology. AMD has already done this with FSR 4 and FSR 'Redstone' at the current time and has so far completely omitted graphics cards with RDNA 3 ("GFX110X") and RDNA 3.5 ("GFX115X"), while DLSS 4.5 is supported down to the Geforce RTX 2000.
