Google is introducing new features for Gmail: A central subscription overview and a quick action for Android should make the inbox much clearer.
Google is currently testing a new feature for Gmail users that should make the inbox clearer. The focus is on an additional button in the web client, which can be used to centrally manage newsletters and other subscriptions. The new feature is called "Manage Subscriptions" and appears in the left side menu of the Gmail web interface. For the first time, users will receive a separate overview of all current newsletter and mailing list subscriptions. According to Google, the update has already been available in the Android app since the end of April. Now the introduction also starts on the Web, but gradually.
Manage and unsubscribe newsletters easily
The "Manage Subscriptions" function gives users bundled access to all current subscriptions. Google reports this on its own support page. The colleagues from Techbook have already discovered the new function and published a screenshot. In the overview, users can see the names and e-mail domains of the respective senders. It also shows how often they have sent e-mails recently. If you select an entry, you can view all received messages from the respective sender. A "unsubscribe" button also makes it possible to unsubscribe directly from further e–mails - similar to the well-known unsubscribe links in advertising e-mails.
Web rollout is running, new feature also for Android
While the new overview is already available in the Android app, it will only be activated gradually on the web. The function is not yet visible to everyone. However, Google plans to make them available for all Gmail accounts soon. A review by Techbook's colleagues shows that the rollout in Germany is currently not yet complete. In addition, Google is testing another innovation for the Android app. In the future, it should be possible to mark emails as read directly in the notification bar - without opening the app at all. This feature is currently under A/B testing and will initially only be enabled for selected accounts.
Google is focusing on more user-friendliness
The current extensions are intended to improve the operation and clarity of Gmail. Especially the new subscription management relieves the inbox and complements existing tools for organizing e-mails. The function for quickly marking as read should also make dealing with e-mails in everyday life much easier. However, it remains to be seen exactly when all German users will be able to access the new functions. Google has not given any details about this so far.
