| Google launches online age verification with Sparkasse |
Google wants to simplify age verification on the Internet using the Google Wallet. For this, the Internet giant is getting the savings banks on board as a verification partner.
Offering Internet content unsuitable for children and young people poses major problems for website operators and is questionable from the point of view of data protection officers. Because so far there is no system that can reliably prove the age of majority of users without the users having to disclose large amounts of sensitive data. Just a few weeks ago, Google announced that it would allow age verification without the transfer of personal data using a new verification system in the wallet. Now the concept is taking shape.
Proof of age at the bank
Apparently, the verification via the Google Wallet in Germany will start soon. Apparently, in order to obtain proof of the Google account, the Internet giant plans to use trusted institutions as verification partners. In the company blog "The Keyword", Google now names the first contact points for this task: the savings banks. They check the age of the persons and issue the proof of age for the user's wallet. It is still unclear whether the users have to be customers at the respective savings banks for this.
ID copy no longer necessary
With this proof, Internet users can then log in to age-restricted offers on the internet via wallet in their smartphone or in the linked Chrome browser and identify themselves as old enough, provided that they support the service. Personal data is not shared and is not stored on the smartphone. This eliminates the usual entry of personal data or the transmission of photos of official documents such as the identity card or passport. Therefore, as a result of a data leak at a website operator, non-official documents can fall into the hands of cybercriminals. Google has not yet revealed exactly when the new proof of age will start. The blog post only indicates that it will be coming in the next few months.
